Day 2 – From Nara to Kyoto

For this route, the Shinkansen (bullet train) is not included in the JR Pass, but that’s not a problem, the distance is short. A local train will get you there in about 45 minutes.

Kyoto, the former capital of Japan, is rich in history and culture. We spent two full days there. After arriving, we left our luggage at the hotel and headed straight to the old town.

We used Google Maps throughout the trip: it works perfectly in Japan. It even tells you which part of the platform to stand on for the most convenient exit at your destination.

We took a bus to Yasaka Shrine, which is surrounded by several major landmarks, all clearly marked on the map. In my opinion, one full day is enough to explore this area. Make sure to visit the Starbucks I pinned. It’s located on Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka streets, inside a traditional Japanese house. It’s a unique spot and definitely worth a stop.
